In his second season, (1987-88) at the helm of Millwall, manager John Docherty won the old Second Division Championship and the club was promoted to the top flight of English football for the first time in its history. Thanks to the prolific goal scoring partnership of Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino (who in 3 seasons scored 99 goals between them), The Lions finished a respectable 10th in the league. The next season was not as productive and Millwall’s days amongst the elite were ended with relegation in 1990 and John Docherty was replaced by Bruce Rioch.
