This painting shows the Arsenal team which received the nickname that was originally given to Preston North End over a hundred years previously.(See notes on “In A League Of Their Own”). The name was given to Arsene Wenger’s team as it completed the 2003-4 season unbeaten to win the Premiership. Wenger had predicted in 2002 that his team was capable of going a season unbeaten and this turned out to be true as, out of 38 games, Arsenal won 26, Drew 12 and lost 0 on their way to the third title since Wenger arrived at the club 1996. The following season the unbeaten run went on to 49 but was ended, acrimoniously, by Manchester United who beat them 2 – 0 at Old Trafford.
