In 1975, following a less than successful 44 days as manager of Leeds United, Brian Clough arrived at Nottingham Forest, a year later Clough recruited Peter Taylor as his assistant and the pair were to oversee the most successful period in Forest’s history. Following promotion to the old first division in 1977 the club became one of the few teams to win the league the season after coming up, (1977 -78), the team also won the league cup after beating Liverpool 1 – 0 in a replay at Old Trafford. Incredibly Forest went on to become Champions of Europe in the 78 – 79 season, beating Malmo one nil in the final at the Olympiastadion in Munich, the feat was repeated the following year when they retained the trophy defeating Hamburg by the same score in the Santiago Benabeu Stadium in Madrid. This painting shows the players who took part in those finals including England’s most capped player, Peter Shilton (125 caps), Viv Anderson the first black player to pull on the England shirt, and English football’s first one million pound footballer Trevor Francis.
