Sunderland arrived at fierce rivals Newcastle on 14th April 2013 having not won a Premier League match in 9 games. Paulo Di Canio had arrived, with much controversy, 2 weeks earlier having replaced Martin O’Neil as manager of the struggling club. Sunderland was above the relegation zone just on goal difference, Newcastle was also in a precarious position and games were running out for both clubs. Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring for Sunderland in the 26th minute, Andy Johnson added another on the 74th minute, prompting a Jose Mourinho style, suit ruining slide along the pitch from Di Canio. In the 82nd minute substitute David Vaughan added the third goal. It was Sunderland’s greatest victory on Tyneside for 34 years and probably helped save the team from relegation. It is rumoured Di Canio’s grass stained suit now hangs in the board room in memory of this historic win.
